Over the last few years our country has seen a lot of change. In our churches, a lot has changed…for many that’s an understatement. Some of the “change” has been small and other “change” has been more than noticeable. Think for a moment about pocket change. Sometimes, maybe most of the time it seems irrelevant. We toss it on our dresser, leave it in our pockets or if it falls on the ground we keep walking…why? Because it’s annoying at times…maybe because it doesn’t make a difference individually. A few pennies, a dime and a quarter doesn’t get much these days.

But when we look at all the “change” collectively, when we save up that pocket change in a jar and take it to the bank – our financial “position” is “changed”. I’m challenged in this season to appreciate the change around us, no matter how small & insignificant or big & noticeable it is! God uses “change” to “change” our position…to change how we look at life, or do life for that matter – to change how we appreciate what we still have (like my pastor said this past Sunday, “we always have God’s love!” simple? yup, but everyone needs a reminder here and there). We can take all this “change” to the Lord!

Some people might be saying ”what we have to work with is minimal at best”. While this is true in some regard, with God on our side we have THE MOST to work with!!

Check out this link to Abraham Lincoln’s proclamation establishing Thanksgiving Day…in the midst of a lot of change going on in this country in a different time… http://www.classicallibrary.org/lincoln/thanksgiving.htm

This week, think about this question: “Who’s happy for your life…how you live it – who’s been “changed” in part because of you & who lives in you?”

Happy Thanksgiving everyone,

Hey everyone!!

Below are the details of our summer missions campaign through October 17th with our youth group. Feel free to read and comment on what you think. EVEN BETTER, be challenged to do your part. We challenged our students to give at least $2 a week or more towards this AND get others to match their giving…if you already give to missions and can’t do anymore that’s cool that you’re already giving!! This isn’t supposed to take the place of the tithe either, this is above and beyond that. Certainly appreciate anything you can do…thanks for reading!!

Details You Want to Know:

-Through October 17th I’m doing “Walk For The World:Walking to work each day so missionaries don’t have to”.

-Through Walk For The World, I’m raising money for “Speed The Light”, an organization that raises money to purchase vehicles and other equipment needed to reach the unreached. (read about STL through link, copy & paste: http://stl.ag.org/about.cfm)

-23 of the students in our youth group have pledged to give every week to STL (we’re believing more will sign on as time goes on)

-WOULD YOU consider pledging to/supporting “Walk for the World” & “Speed The Light”? Below you can read the detailed version of this and get info of how you can help!

———————————————————————–

“Walking to work so missionaries don’t have to”… That’s the entire purpose of WALK FOR THE WORLD. My name is Nick and through October 17th 2010, I’m raising money for Speed The Light by walking to work each morning. Speed The Light raises funds to provide the “essential transportation and creative communication” equipment for missionaries around the world.

There are many missionaries that are in the country where they need to be, yet can’t reach the “unreached” without a vehicle to transport the needed equipment(Bibles, video equipment to show movies in their language & more)…WE CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!

My journey started on Thursday June 10th - it is 2.2 miles (4,248 steps) from my house to our church where we are the youth pastors. 23 of our students so far have pledged to give each week and we’re believing for more. I work in the office M-Th and have church on Sunday.

Would you consider partnering with us by pledging/donating for the next 4 months? We appreciate any prayer we can get, after all – faith can move mountains. You can give a one time gift, pledge per month/week, miles walked or steps taken. Each day I’ll be posting what missionary/missionaries I prayed for while walking AS WELL AS the number of steps it took to get to work.

I am not a runner – but I’m intrigued by people who run everyday…especially the 34,000 people who paid good money to run 13 or 26 miles this past Saturday in Nashville. Did you hear that? 34,000 people paid money…to wake up at 5am or earlier (4:45am myself and some 2-3am)…to run(and walk)…a great distance. Did I mention this was on a Saturday morning? Whatever happened to Saturday morning cartoons, or making coffee, pancakes and sausage (ok and bacon) for the fam…at 10am?! Anyways, a few things I picked up from a lot of people…

1. It didn’t matter: where you came from, Nashville or Kenya(yeah, they crossed the finish line before me)//if you were dressed in the latest most expensive professional runner garb, or if you had a pair of cargo shorts and work boots on(that wasn’t me // how old or young you were//what color you are//if you had run in dozens or a handful of marathons or if this was your first//if you started off running then transitioned to a walk, then ran across the finish line//it didn’t matter…the fact that you were running the race and were part of the journey was enough to be accepted “as is”. People weren’t hesitant to say hi to you AND introduce themselves AND start a conversation. no wonder 34,000 people don’t mind getting up early on a Saturday morning…

2. People I didn’t know or had ever met, cheered me on while running/walking: so encouraging! I didn’t have to be part of their group for them to notice or acknowledge me. It’s just what they did – like they were looking forward to the next person or group coming around the corner – anticipation…no wonder 34,000 people don’t mind getting up early on a Saturday morning…

3. Not only were these unknowns cheering, some went above and beyond by giving me fresh-cut fruit from their front lawn: I mean, I paid money to run…they paid money to keep me going – and all I had to do was say “thanks” and keep going. They didn’t ask for anything in return…but it did help me look forward to the part of the race that took me down the other side of the street. I wanted to come back…no wonder 34,000 people don’t mind getting up early on a Saturday morning…

4. Everyone was moving the same direction: Perhaps the biggest one of all, although certainly not reality in life…in most cases anyways. I didn’t have to be concerned with wanting to move forward but having someone coming directly at me-or side-swiping me at that. It was a great visual of Tim Elmore’s habitude “Rivers & Floods”. The mass of people were like a river, continual fluid motion in one direction, all headed towards the same goal. Not like a flood going all over the place bringing destruction to everything in its path. No wonder 34,000 people don’t mind getting up early on a Saturday morning…

5. Some runners that finished, walked the end of the course in reverse (on the side and out of the way!) and cheered on those that were still going: Really? when done, I was ready for my shins & ankles to sit in an ice bath for 10 minutes then add some Canadian ice cause it’s colder, right? How amazing it was to have those that had gone before come back and encourage us that were still going. They didn’t have to, they could have gone on and formed a group all by themselves and talked about their journey, how it was for them…or how they did it better-but they didn’t. They pulled the ones that were coming behind them. No wonder 34,000 people don’t mind getting up early on a Saturday morning…

Which brings me to Sunday morning. Hey now, don’t go there. This is not a slam against any church by any stretch, after all I work at one. However, I heard someone say this once: “If there is even one person within driving distance of your church that hasn’t had the opportunity to know Jesus, it’s too small.”

Here’s to running the race and being part of the journey,

Nick

I didn’t get any negative response to yesterdays post however something woke me up in the middle of the night that I want to clarify. Regarding my comments on “other people” blogging and seeming to always having profound statements and being really smart…

Insecurity is something we all deal with from time to time and this is what I was eluding to with those comments. The feeling of ”not measuring up” or whatever messes with my mind from every now and then. The few blogs that I do read are worth reading…filled with intent and great thoughts that challenge who I am! So, didn’t mean anything to anyone…again, just working through my own insecurity and moving forward!!! That’s where the whole idea came from to write for my kids hoping one day they’ll read and keep some of it with them – so there, I worked all that out with you guys!

I think sometimes all people need is to be "seen"...

well – maybe the reason I haven’t inserted this blogging stuff into my life yet is because of time. Or maybe the thought “what do I have to offer to the world?”. That’s a valid question. B/C does it seem like everyone who blogs is really smart? Or like they always have something so profound to say? Which by the way, is totally cool – I learn from those people…maybe one day, my kids will read this and think “my dad…lame” OR maybe they’ll read it and say “wow, I have a piece of my dad with me forever”…that’s what I’d prefer. So, as I begin my blogging journey, whatever blogging is – maybe this will be a way for me to keep track of my own thoughts. And one day, those thoughts will be handed over to those closest to me. Along the way, others will read – but my words won’t mean nearly as much to everyone else as they will to my own…just being real, practical. Not making excuses, I can only offer who I am and what the Lord has done and continues to do in my life!! Enough of the intro stuff…

Right now, my heart is overwhelmed with this question: “How am I going to be a blessing to others this season?”. The question isn’t “how CAN i be…” but “how AM I going to be…” there’s a BIG difference in those two questions. The latter, suggests to make a list. How many times do i make a list and fail to get to it, or put things off OR rush through them ONLY to check them off? The answer to that question is more scary when actually answered The question “how AM I GOING TO BE A BLESSING” suggests the need for determination and oozes with the thought that I’m going to have to be tenacious (thank you to my 9th grade basketball coach for that word) to achieve an answer and flesh it out. Of course, it didn’t take long to find my answer.

We’re at the tail end or our december series “reason” in our youth group (@connect_sm!!) talking about the reasons behind “Jesus is the reason for the season”. What are those reasons, what are His reasons? HE really is my favorite person to preach/teach on in a non-cliche way. So studying His life led me to this conclusion and my answer for now… One of the biggest ways Jesus was a blessing to others is that He saw people. When He looked at someone it wasn’t a glance, He saw them. He saw them right where they were at in their present circumstance or life situation but it didn’t end there. He went beyond that and saw every person for who they are in Him. He saw what they were missing, what they needed and who they could be…in Him. I think sometimes all people need is to be “seen” like this – to notice their present state of life but to not get stuck on that…to not stare at them and think about how we COULD be a blessing to them while continuing to stare and walk by. Rather, to think about and act on the question “How am I going to be a blessing to them”.

Well, we’ll see how this blogging thing goes…if I don’t feel the need to put some stuff down before, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
